Book Fair

India's biggest slum is what the world sees Dharavi as. Fortunately, the situation is rapidly changing as many steps are being taken by NGOs, government and society to bring in the much welcome change to the slum.

Why?

Dharavi, in reality is an embodiment of Mumbai's spirit.  Its first residents were fishermen who would sell their catch to the Portuguese. Later as industrialization developed Bombay, Dharavi became a dumping ground for the unemployed and poor migrants.  Today, the population density of Dharavi is approximately 1 million people per square kilometer making it one of the biggest slums in India. The people living there stay abuzz with activity and hard work to bring about a change in their lives. However, lack of education is a challenge that Dharavi continues to face.

When and Where

May 13 to 15, 2011 in Mumbai

What?

YES!+ Mulund chapter organized a book fair to raise funds for Dharavi school children with the objective of providing them education.

With the belief that such a fair would bring together people from different strata of society to support the cause, the search for books to be sold in the fair started among the volunteers and YES!+ teachers. The journey of collecting books began from gathering them from immediate friends and relatives and moved onto contacting strangers as well. The collected books sorted, categories labeled, the volunteers were waiting with a contented sense of establishment for the fair to start on May 13. Both young and old visited the book fair with lots of curiosity and anticipation and many of them went back with a smile of finding the book they were searching for.
